After some communications in this way last week, AMD has officially confirmed today its decision to get rid of the "ATI" name and eliminate the ATI Radeon brand mark.
AMD wants to avoid consumers' confusion between the two brand as new products are on the schedule which link both AMD microprocessor technology and a Radeon graphics tech on the same chip. The first CPU-GPU products should arrive at the beginning pof 2011
Current products still wearing the ATI logo won't be rename. Actually the first AMD GPU cards will appear at the end of this year.
All Linux users like me, were well aware of the fact AMD owned ATI. A strong story of love and hate does exit between them with some epic episodes during which the quest for ATI card drivers was quite nightmarish (the main reason which actually explains my current GPU is Nvidia).
Nevertheless AMD is mostly very well perceived by the costumers and the disappearance of ATI won't be cried much. Anyway for most PC gamers, we're turning over a new leaf ...
