Life On Mars & Ashes to Ashes

I haven't made yet a topic about the original BBC series Life On Mars and its sequel/spin off Ashes To Ashes thought I should have done it as I had been simply astonished by the series as all who know me in RL know it due to the active promotion I've made for it to be known while it has only been released confidentially in France.

The US have had AGAIN the very wrong idea to do a remake instead of broadcasting the original serie. Despite my anger against this annoying habit and my fears regarding the result (for a French, Life On Mars is quite a hard English understanding exercise due to the Manchester accent but, clearly it brings a lot to the atmosphere), beyond all that I must admit I was also a bit interested as there were anyway some possibilities to imagine something nice... Even if the trailer looked like a parody I still had a little tiny hope...

Sadly it seems I was right to be worried. :x

www.denofgeek.com wrote:The Americanised Life On Mars pilot episode has hit the Internet early. According to early reports, fears have well and truly been realised...

Another US TV show has leaked early, and this is one that we were fascinated to find out about.

The leaking of pre-air American TV show pilots is rapidly turning from a trickle into a monsoon. First True Blood and now the Americanised version of BBC’s Life On Mars.
Since Steve Carroll’s take on The Office people have taken these transatlantic conversions more seriously, but after seeing this particular that honeymoon might well be over.

For any of the actors in this production reading this, you’re not doing much wrong, it’s just this doesn’t work – it’s lost in translation.

The UK version worked because it anchored itself in our TV lore, using The Sweeney and Softy-Softly Task Force as cultural references. But this version chooses to avoid those associations, instead going for a litigation-friendly homogenous 70s cop show that’s not remotely evocative of anything.

As a result, while Colm Meaney is a fine actor, his Gene Hunt isn’t funny, witty, memorable or interesting in any way. But it gets worse, the comedy duo of Carling and Skelton are entirely missing, and Annie’s character is pushed forward out of the blocks as a potential love interest within minutes of being introduced. It’s all wrong, and it goes entirely off the rails before it’s even got going.

But the translation has also thrown up some wonderful differences between British and American culture. When John Simm’s Sam Tyler turns up and says he’s from the future, the characters laugh at him. When Jason O'Mara’s does the same thing people refer him to a good ‘therapist’. But they’ve also got themselves spiked on the end of other more modern predilections; this is a 1972 oddly free of sexism and racism it seems. Also we see nobody smoke, although cigarettes are littered everywhere – like that makes any sense?

It’s also looks like it was something of a nightmare for the production team, because other than a few original vehicles it’s a chronological mess. When Sam wakes up next to the car we’re presented with a really piss poor CGI steadycam sweep of LA behind him, emphasising I presume that there aren’t any suitable places to get a real shot like that any more. The French Connection is playing on the local cinema, except that was released a whole year earlier. I’m sure if I looked closer I could find a million other things. It’s like they didn’t care – or they’d been told it was a dream and so it didn’t matter if Sam didn’t remember things correctly.

In the final analysis this is a version of Life on Mars where everything that made the original worthwhile has been bleached out, leaving a hollow husk to twist in the wind. Unless the people making this start to ‘get it’ very quickly, then this won’t actually make it to the end of the first season, or even half way there.

Anyone has seen the first episodes ?

I'll try to do a little topic about the BBC series soon. If it isn't done yet, YOU HAVE TO SEE THE BBC ORIGINAL LIFE ON MARS !!!
All people I've advised to watch it have like it a lot so you should try to asap ;)

ok long time ago now but I finally decided myself to watch the first episode ad ... well, I really should have started a topic on the orginal series.

As said I'v watched the first episode and won't go further. For ONE excellent idea ( :spoilers: the two towers...), the rest is just bad or very very very bad (HOW CAN THEY CUT DAVID BOWIE'S SONG THAT WAY AND DESTROY THE MOST IMPORTANT SCENE OF EPISODE ONE !!?!?). Even Harvey Keitel clearly doesn't know what he is doing there and is very far from the exhuberant Gene Hunt made to life by Philip Glenister.

So forget about the US version and run on the original English one, and do it quick cause you have to watch the two series and the first series of Ashes to Ashes before the second one starts on TV on February (can't wait).

:spoilers: DON'T WATCH IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE TWO SERIES OF LIFE ON MARS YET !!!!

In 2007, Life On Mars dvds have been Liewen and I's most offered gift to friends and familly, all ages taken together and ALL have returned enthusiastic thanks for having discovered one of the best TV series released !! :)

And if Ashes to Ashes starts a little bit like a parody, believe me, it's far from it and I can't tell you that after the first series final I just can't wait to see the following :bounce:

I do prefer the character of Sam as well but the final of Ashes to Ashes season #1 just made my jaw hit the floor

Last but not least, I stay convinced that soon or later Sam's character will come back and this suspicion grew bigger with season #2 first episode.

From Ashes to Ashes season #1 first episode we learn that Sam has disappeared, he is supposed to drown himself in a river though his body has never been found.

From season #2 first episode we know Alex (or Sam) are apparently not the only one to travel from one place/time to the other and the other ones don't seem very friendly ... So more reasons for Sam to go "undercover"...

Can't wait to see episode #2 you must already have seen :bounce:

Have you seen episode #2 bigazza ??

Just watched it and I can take now bets regarding the little theory I gave in my former post :D

Just after having watched this episode I've resisted to the urge to rush on my dvd collection but youtubed that sequence from one of my most favourite 80's tv series: Miami Vices.

(I wonder if I'm not going to start a favourite TV series sequences topic  ) ;)

The guys of Ashes to Ashes have surely watched that series too and their work to have at the same time a modern series but also a series which manages to ring so many nostalgic bells is really amazing.

Have I already told you you had to rush on Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes ?? :D

You haven't watched episode 2 yet  ;)

Now regarding this being the final season you scare me as for me three seasons were scheduled and it is was the case, getting back to two could be disastrous regarding the main story

Sadly bbc iplayer doesn't work in France. We have to find other means to see it in time but the dvds to be released in July are already on my list :D

Don't miss this interview with with exec producer Matthew Graham.

=> http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tv/s49/ashe ... hes-3.html

"The idea was to get darker with each series: series one would be quite frothy and iconically '80s, then series two we would peel back the layers and get a bit darker, then series three we would get right down to the nitty gritty and all the deep stuff we have to go through to get all the revelations we want."

"what we're saying is that we're going to finally explain the mythology we've created. And in theory, there will be no mystery left"

"The idea is to unify the two shows. Series three unifies Life On Mars and Ashes To Ashes and makes them one show. By the time you get halfway through series three of Ashes To Ashes, you will actually feel like you're watching series five of Life On Mars!"

READ THE FULL INTERVIEW !! ;)

And thx Brad' for the hint :gj:
